Pump prices continued to fall in Western Pennsylvania, but the latest dip was modest.
The average cost of a gallon of unleaded self-serve this week is $2.446, a 1.5-cent decrease from $2.461 a week ago, according to a report Thursday from AAA East Central.
This is the 13th consecutive week the average has fallen in Western Pennsylvania, totaling 69 cents. This week’s price is 33.3 cents lower than it was a year ago.
Pennsylvania’s average dropped four cents to $2.45, as prices declined three to five cents in all Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states. Gasoline stocks jumped by 724,000 barrels in the region, raising the total inventory to 61 million barrels.
Washington’s average fell 1.7 cents, to $2.461 – down from $2.478. The price paid there again ranks 13th lowest among 22 Western Pennsylvania cities and towns listed by AAA.
New Castle has the lowest average ($2.206), followed by Butler ($2.339). Warren ($2.646) has the most expensive petrol.
The nationwide figure dipped by three cents to $2.24, which is 25 cents cheaper year over year.
The national demand for gasoline, for the week ending Dec. 28, was 8.6 million barrels per day, according to the Energy Information Administration. That is the lowest level since February 2017.
Despite record motor vehicle travel for the holiday week, AAA said, demand plummeted by 900,000 barrels, a sign that the need could be lower than anticipated this winter.
