Gasoline prices continued on the ascent in Western Pennsylvania, but Washington’s figure remained among the more affordable.
The average cost of a gallon of unleaded self-serve is $2.681 across the region, AAA East Central reported Monday afternoon. That is four cents higher than it was last week ($2.641). The new price, however, is 14.5 cents below that of a year ago ($2.826).
Washington’s average last week – $2.528 – was the lowest among 22 Western Pennsylvania cities and towns listed by AAA. The city’s price jumped five cents this week to $2.578, but that is the third-lowest in this half of the state, behind only New Castle ($2.549) and Sharon ($2.574). Gas is Washington is 10.3 cents lower than the regional average.
Eleven of those 22 areas have an average price above $2.70 per gallon. Bradford and Warren, which usually are near the top, have the most expensive petrol in the region – each at $2.759.
Pennsylvania’s average rose again, by three cents to $2.64, placing the Keystone State at the top of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region. Average prices in those states vary widely, though, from $2.20 to $2.64.
On a promising note, following two weeks of downturns, gasoline inventories built up by 1 million barrels to 68.6 million, according to the Energy Information Administration.
The national average bumped up another three cents, to $2.42. That price is 17 cents higher than it was a month ago, but 10 cents cheaper than last year at this time.
