Natural gas production hit a record high in 2018, according to a report from the Energy Information Administration. And Pennsylvania played an integral role.
EIA said gas production measured as gross withdrawals averaged 101.3 billion cubic feet per day. That was an increase of 10 billion cubic feet per day from 2017, when the previous national record was established. Last year’s production level was 11 percent higher than in 2017, the largest annual increase recorded.
Gross withdrawals, according to EIA, increased every month of 2018 except June. Production peaked in December at 107.8 Bcf/d.
Once again, the Appalachian region was the top natural gas region. Producers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio combined for 28.5 Bcf/d in 2018, more than one-fourth of the U.S. output. Pennsylvania was the second-largest producer among states, behind Texas.
