Fall at Canonsburg Town Park is beautiful, and considerably quieter than the summer months. Work is continuing on several projects throughout the park area.

Canonsburg Public Works has been digging trenches to avert water issues from an area of the ball fields.

Town Park has been a local family destination for many years. It is a quaint place to have your family reunion, graduation party, small wedding or last-day-of-school party.

To that end, the park board is working on renovating the main pool party room so birthday parties have a place to go should the weather not cooperate. New lighting and flooring is in the works, along with additional electrical and security enhancements. Last year, our pavilions were fully booked, so plan ahead for next summer. Reservations can be made as early as January by calling the borough office, and pool passes can be purchased as gifts online as well.

Our volunteer clean-up day at the pool house was a great success. Several high school students and adults pitched in to get the area in tip-top shape. New pennants and flags are scheduled to go up next season and we are going to offer the sponsorship banners again for those who wish to support the pool and park.

A Memorial Bench project very similar to the picnic table replacement project will soon be available. Please let us know if you would be interested in sponsoring a bench in the name of a loved one, a family reunion marker or another long-standing memorial.

The basketball court is near completion with the sport court tile floor, fence and hoops yet to be installed. Paving was completed in October. A dedication date will be announced on the park’s website.

The FITS group once again assisted with clearing some of the Ash tree devastation and removal. There are still several trees that need to be removed as they are very large and create a potential problem if they fall on their own. We are in the process of identifying, removing and replenishing our tree population.

Canon-McMillan Youth Girls’ Softball Association wrapped up another great fall season and put the fields to bed on Nov. 5; however, girl’s softball does not stop in the winter. This off season, CMYGSA will be hosting winter indoor open gyms at the Armory Youth Center. The association will also be developing more programs (skills clinics, pitching lessons and catching instruction) slated to start the end of February and continue through the beginning of April.

The Spring girl’s softball season will begin April 1 and sign-ups (online) will open at the beginning of February. For more information, visit the CMYGSA website at www.cmygsa.org.

On certain days, Town Park comes alive with the sounds of music, bands and children playing all around. This past year was no exception. We had a great 2016 with our concert programs and are preparing for an equally fantastic season in 2017.

Bands are now being selected for a crowd-pleasing line-up. Our concerts continue to provide a wide range of music styles from country to blues, oldies and classic rock, among other popular styles. Our Second Sunday Concert Series will be scheduled in June, July, August and September. Our Poolside Concerts will be in June and July. All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting.

To keep music programs going, we need the continued financial support of our residents and local corporations. We hope you will include us in your budget planning for next year. Your tax- deductible donations can be sent to Friends of the Park – Concert Series, P. O. Box 4, Canonsburg, PA 15317.

We are looking forward to a second successful season of our craft/farmers market next summer. Various food booths and additional crafters will be added, along with local farmers. It will take place Wednesdays by the Velma Jefferies playground off of Woodland Road to the Passante/DeJohn pavilion. Dates and times will be announced.

The change of season has not dampened the Canonsburg Town Park pickleball fanatics. The pressure to find an indoor facility in Canonsburg was top priority after spending a summer in the park. The Armory Youth Center has welcomed us to their beautiful facility. We are extremely thankful for this opportunity to play indoors.

The outdoor season at the park was very successful. We introduced 87 residents to pickleball. Several Canonsburg Town Park players did very well in Courthouse Clash Pickleball Tournaments in October. Vernie D’Zura and Mary Jo Flory earned a bronze medal and Ray Mazzoni and Doug McKenery earned a silver medal.

The indoor season is underway. Courts are available Monday through Thursday from 9-11 a.m. We will move to Monday evenings from 5-7 p.m. after Thanksgiving. The cost is $40 for 10 plays or $5 for walk-in play.

Pickleball is a paddle sport which combines the skills of tennis and Ping-Pong. The net is similar to tennis. The object of the game is to hit a whiffle ball back and forth over a net. The game is usually played in doubles.

The Osterman Project has been put on hold, although volunteers have been clearing the paths to form a more accessible walking path. We hope to improve this in the next few years with exercise stations and plant enhancement.

The Park and Recreation Board will not be sending out its annual donation mailer, but instead will sponsor a fundraising event. People have requested we resume events like our Night at the Races, Dine in the Pool or Jimmy Buffet Night, so check our website for upcoming details.
