Working together for a better borough

Soon a new year will be upon us.

Many things have been accomplished this year by all the departments in Canonsburg Borough, including the police and fire departments, EMS, public works, sewage treatment plant, administrative staff, parks and recreation and council and mayor. The success is due to the collaboration of all departments, making Canonsburg a better place in which to live, work and play.

It is also with great pleasure that we will move forward this year with a balanced budget with no tax increase for the coming year. As we continue moving forward in the right direction, your ideas and comments are always welcomed.

One thing that remains an overwhelming concern to me is the heroin epidemic spreading across our community, our country and our nation. I have made it a priority this year to try to reach as many people as possible by speaking in churches, arming citizens with information and seeking ways in which individuals can help.

I feel like I have reached people at these events, but we need volunteers to help fight this battle. It is through the efforts of a community working together that we achieve results!

Volunteers have a huge effect on health and well-being in our community. They are the heart of every community. A national trend shows volunteerism is on the decline. It’s our obligation to find an area we are interested in and donate some time.

The Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department is also in great need of volunteers in order to keep fire protection at the high standard it has always been. If you are able, please donate your time and service and get involved!

Last year, as well as this year, I’m asking everyone to take a few minutes to reach out to the neighbors and get to know each other. Take a moment to talk to someone seated next to you at the barber shop, doctor’s office, church or wherever else you may be able to reach out and try to make a new friend.

Like family, friendship breeds the opportunity of caring by watching over our neighbors and neighborhoods to keep them safe. Friendship gives all of us the opportunity to work together to make our world a better place.

As in the past, my open-door policy remains in effect. I encourage anyone to visit me at my office, or if you are unable to visit, please call if there is anything you need or would like to share in the best interest of the community. As always, I appreciate your ideas and comments.

In closing, my wife Kimberly and I wish everyone a blessed Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
