Junior Achievement honors local business executives

On Nov. 14, Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania hosted the 30th annual Spirit of Enterprise Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The event, for nearly 300 guests, honors those who have made outstanding contributions to the business, social and cultural assets to this region. Each year, the chosen laureates are interviewed by Junior Achievement high school students several weeks prior to the event. The students use this opportunity to write a speech based on their experience with the honorees that they will read on stage at the event.

Junior Achievement honored four individuals and one organization whose extraordinary efforts have enriched our community. One of the honorees included Canonsburg resident and retired president and CEO of Koppers, Walt Turner, as the Business Hall of Fame Laureate. This year’s Spirit of Enterprise Award also honored: JA Distinguished Alumni Award, Jim Nickel (managing director, CIBC); Impact Company of the Year Award, Oberg Industries; Entrepreneurial Achievement Award, Richard Lunak (president and CEO, Innovation Works); and Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award, Carolyn Duronio (Partner, ReedSmith).

Canonsburg officials propose no change to property tax rate

Canonsburg’s proposed budget for 2019 includes no increase in real estate taxes. The $5.3 million spending plan is about $60,000 larger that this year’s spread.

“I think there were just little changes, contractual changes,” said borough manager Denise Lesnock. “With health insurance, we budgeted a 5 percent increase.”

The real estate millage rate will remain at 3.94 mills, or $394 in taxes for every $100,000 in assessed value. Most – 3.21 mills – goes into the general fund. The remnant goes into special funds for roads, fire department equipment, debt service and parks and recreation.

Lesnock said the final vote on the budget is expected Dec. 10 (which is after press time for Canonsburg Magazine).
