At its April 9 meeting, Canonsburg Borough Council addressed issues raised by Greg Gregorakis, whose laundry business has been condemned by the building inspector.
Gregorakis said that he has a letter from a structural engineer and a contracting company stating that the building in which the laundry business is housed is not in danger of collapsing. Therefore, he asked for council’s help with re-opening the business.
However, Solicitor Jeffrey Derrico said as a policy matter, council should not interfere with the ordinary operations of its staff.
He added that Gregorakis’ engineer said the building was unsafe until repairs are made and the repairs still need to be done. Once repairs are made to bring the building up to code standards, it can be reopened.
Also at the meeting:
EJ Klecker, owner of Rusty Gold Brewing, explained a plan for a “Red, White and Brew” event on July 4 which would use the parking lot adjacent to the brewery on Pike Street. Klecker said the event would bridge the gap between the end of the parade and the beginning of the fireworks, and possibly include food trucks, craft vendors and bands.
Rusty Gold Brewery said it would be responsible for cleanup and donate any additional revenue to the Youth Armory.
Park board president Rich Russo talked with council about a DCNR Rehabilitation grant for the installation of a pickleball court in the park at the Passante parking lot. The $84,000 grant requires a $42,000 match. Russo said the Friends of the Park and Park board are each contributing $14,000, and the borough is being asked to do the same.
In addition to the pickleball court, the grant would be used for updating trails and the entrance to the park. If awarded, the project could begin in the spring of 2019.
Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone presented a check for $636.50 to Police Chief Alex Coghill. The check is from recovered money from drug dealer arrests in which the district attorney’s office forfeits the money and donates it back to the police department.
Coghill said that the Justice Department and U.S. Attorney’s Office plans to recognize Detective Chuck Tenney for outstanding investigative work regarding overdose investigations that have led to numerous successful criminal investigations.
KLH engineer Veronica Bennett said she and Public Works Director Tom Lawrence had met with the conservation district concerning the McBurney Road flood issues to discuss the dirt gravel low volume road (DGLVR) program that specifically deals with storm water issues.
A proposal is being developed to see if additional grant money can be awarded. The DGLVR is not a matching fund grant; the award depends on the status of the project.
