Community Conversations

The next Canonsburg Community Conversation meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Frank Sarris Public Library. The topic will be code enforcement and fire inspection. Light refreshments will be served.

Community Conversations is an initiative to bridge the gap between local government and community through conversations. The intent is to connect with and empower residents in order to improve Canonsburg neighborhoods. The goal is to encourage civic engagement by keeping residents updated and involved in the legislative process to guarantee their voices are being heard.

For more information, call 724-745-1800.

Fund drive underway

The Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department annual fund drive is now in progress. As of this date, just 10 percent of residents and businesses have supported the CVFD effort.

All funds raised during the fund drive help to finance future and current major equipment purchases.

Your donation may be made payable to Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department, 1 Greenside Ave., Canonsburg, Pa. 15317.

History signs to be replaced

In 2002, the Canonsburg Heritage Society placed 14 plaques throughout Canonsburg to mark historical sites of interest. The Washington Area Career and Technology Center made the signs.

The Heritage Society has since disbanded and the signs are now weathered, tattered and faded. Some are unreadable.

The Jefferson College Historical Society plans to replace the signs with a more durable product and is soliciting donations to meet the goal of $8,000.

An individual sign is $550 and may be purchased in memory of a loved one or a family. The name or family will be noted on the sign.

Donations are tax deductible. Checks should be addressed to JCHS, c/o Gina Nestor, treasurer, 5320 Tannehill St., Canonsburg, Pa. 15317.

Turkey drive is underway

The annual 2000 Turkeys drive, sponsored in part by the Observer-Reporter and WJPA, is underway. Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome is also a member of the board. As always, all money raised during the campaign, which continues through Thanksgiving, goes directly toward feeding 7,000 area families.

Board member Pete Povich of WJPA said some changes have been made to the program this year, but that a big fundraising event with Range Resources is still planned. He suggests contacting Washington Food Bank with any questions.

Donations may be sent to 2000 Turkeys, PO Box 2000, Washington, Pa., 15301.
