I would like to offer a few words about volunteerism. Being a public servant for most of my life, I have come to appreciate the many volunteers that we are blessed with in our town. These people go out of their way and spend much of their free time providing services that other towns/municipalities pay to have.

Every single member of the Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department deserves to be commended for the selfless giving of time and energy to provide fire safety to Canonsburg. Firefighters risk their lives, give up time with their families and give up time they could use to do something for themselves to protect you on a day-to-day basis.

I am proud to say that I am a Canonsburg Fireman and have been for 40 years. I share this accomplishment with five other gentlemen who have given their lives to the fire service as well. Michael Nixon (deceased), Tim Solobay, Tom Lawrence, Keith Flood and Ken Flood. All of these men have dedicated their lives to the fire department. The dedication of guys like us have made Canonsburg one of the luckiest towns in the United States because we provide free, expert fire service to all the people.

I could not be prouder to work alongside them and all the other members coming up through the ranks at the fire department. We are still looking for a few good men or ladies to join our cause. Won’t you consider volunteering your time to something this important? We need more dedicated members to carry on the legacy as taught by our forefathers. If you feel you could contribute your time and energy to this great cause, please stop down and see us at the fire department.

I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful summer and had the opportunity to take part in the many events and activities available to us throughout this season. It takes many people and many hours, along with effort and funding to plan these activities. I want to thank the many people who make Canonsburg a great place through their hard work and planning.

Fall means schedules that are filled with kids’ sports and after-school activities. Please be alert when driving through town and be adamant about obeying speed limits and crossing guards to ensure the safety of our children.

My open-door policy remains in effect. I encourage anyone to visit me at my office or if you are unable to visit, please call. I appreciate your ideas and comments.

Enjoy the fall season whether it’s the foliage, the fashion or the cool, crisp weather!
