Years ago, when I worked outside of the home, I used to organize closets on the side. It felt so good to show women what they own in a way they hadn’t seen before. I loved meeting new people, learning about their styles and creating outfits from their wardrobes that they never would have thought to put together, not to mention it felt good to help women get organized in this area of their lives.

Here’s a little how-to, from my closet to yours.

(Note: All heavy winter clothes are in storage boxes with hanger bars. I highly recommend rotating clothes in and out of boxes/bins if your closet isn’t big enough to hold all of your clothes for each season.)

Jeans: Jeans can be organized in many different ways depending on your space. I chose to fold and stack mine in a tall four-bin organizer. They are organized by length but if I had the space, I would hang my jeans so that I could see the pocket, overall style and length.

Leggings: Leggings are folded and stacked in an open bin.

Skirts and pants: Skirts are hung on a bar (short to long) and by color (light to dark). Pants are hung light to dark.

T-Shirts: I like to organize my T-shirts by style first (tank-tops, short-sleeved, long-sleeved) and then organize them by color (light to dark and prints).

Tops and jackets: I organize all of my tops and jackets by sleeve length then by color.

Dresses: I organize dresses in this order – strapless, sleeveless, short-sleeved, 3/4-sleeved, long-sleeved. Before kids, I also organized them by color and since then, I still try. It’s hard.

Scarves: I drape my scarves over a few wooden hangers and then hang them on the back of my closet door.

Necklaces: Hang an extra towel rack in your bathroom and clasp necklaces around the bar.

Bracelets: Costume bracelets are unorganized in a large wicker basket. Dressy bracelets are in a jewelry box.

Sleeve length and color are the top two ways of organizing your clothes. It’s easier to get dressed when you know the type of top you want to wear and the color you’re in the mood for, too. With this system, you know exactly where to go.

I hope this helps you to better organize your closet. Keeping clothes organized means it will take you less time to get ready, you’ll know exactly where to find what you’re looking for and you’ll have more fun creating new outfits!
