It’s been a long time since the Buffalo Creek Watershed Association has held an event at Dutch Fork Lake that actually included fishing.
But Sept. 8, the BCWA, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, will offer a free family fishing program at Dutch Fork Lake from 1 to 5 p.m.
The event will take place at the large parking area at the lake.
Participants will learn basic skills like knot tying, casting, baiting a hook and removing a fish from the hook. After practicing these skills, participants will be permitted to fish, with no license required.
Equipment and bait will be provided by the Fish and Boat Commission if participants do not have their own. Adults must bring a child and children must be with an adult.
Registration is required for the event. It can be done online at www.fishatboat.com/calendar.htm, or by calling Mandy Smith at 814-443-9841 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Registration must completed by Sept. 4.

The competion is open to any member of USA Shooting. Those wishing to participate can visit www.usashooting.org for membership.
The event will be open to both smallbore and air rifle shooters, offering a number of opportunities for local shooters to earn a USA Shooting ranking in a number of classifications.
Targets for the events will be scored by members of the Frazier-Simplex Rifle Club.
For more information about the event or to schedule a relay time, contact Tom Benedict at thomasbenedict@comcast.net.
Reservations will be taken by e-mail on the first day of each month of the event.
• The chilly weather we’ve had at night the past couple of weeks have been good for sleeping. But it will be interesting to see if the cold weather doesn’t cause the leaves to begin turning colors before the end of the month.
It will also be interesting to see if it affects the deer rut this year.
