WAYNESBURG – Charges were filed Tuesday against a Fairmont, W.Va., man who allegedly burglarized a house five years ago in Richhill Township and whose identity was only recently revealed through a DNA match.

Joseph David Ayers, 29, was charged by state police with burglary, theft and criminal mischief in connection with the July 30, 2009, burglary of a house at 213 King Lane in Wind Ridge owned by William Draves.

Hand tools valued at about $100, were stolen in the burglary, police said.

In a criminal complaint filed with District Judge Lou Dayich, police said a storm door window and a window next to the door were broken to gain entry to the house. Inside, police said, they found a cigarette butt which they submitted to the laboratory for testing.

Sufficient DNA was found to develop a profile, which was entered into the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System, police said.

On Jan. 13, police said, they received a report from system administrators that a match had been found and the DNA taken from the cigarette butt matched that of Ayers.
