The Frazier-Simplex Rifle Club wrapped up its third consecutive Pittsburgh and Suburban Rifle League title with a 1,485-1,463 victory over Green Valley last week.
Zac Szabo led the way with a 299, while Cyril Walther fired a season-high 298. Jim Mounts had 297, John Husk 296 and Sylvia Dreistadt 295 in the winning effort for Frazier, which finished, 18-2.
Dormont-Mt. Lebanon finished second at 17-3 with a season-ending win against Murrysville, firing a 1,473.
Matt Piatt had a team-high 296, while Amy Smith and Dean Trew had 295 each, Dan Francis 294 and Tom Gerner 293.
The two Washington County-based teams split their regular season series, 2-2, with the difference being a loss by Dormont-Mt. Lebanon, 1,477-1,475 to Irwin Post 228 early in the season.
Smith became just the second female shooter to win the overall league individual title with an average score of 297.69. That broke the league record of 297.18 set by Gale Cornman in 1981.
She is the first female shooter to fire three 300s in a single season, and also was the first to do it in back-to-back matches.
Smith’s standing average of 98.88 is the highest in league history for a woman.
• After receiving public comments overwhelmingly against changes to its Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only regulations, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission withdrew the proposal.
The proposal included moving the start of the delayed harvest period from June 15 to the Saturday before Memorial Day, allowing the use of bait by all anglers during the regular trout harvest period, allowing youths to use bait year-round in those areas and changing the minimum harvest length from nine to seven inches.
Currently, portions of Pike Run and Dutch Fork Creek in Washington County are delayed harvest areas.
