Q.My mom is freaking out over Pokemon Go. I tried to explain it’s just a game. She won’t listen to me. She saw some online article that talked about kids getting hurt playing. She also things the game is stupid. I think she just doesn’t understand it. My mom reads your column. Can you please explain the game to her? I’m running out of patience. Thanks!

A.First, a disclaimer. I know people are playing Pokemon Go, but I am totally out of the loop. I did some research, and this is what I discovered:

• Pokemon Go is a mobile game released this month.

• It is a location-based, augmented-reality (the play happens in real time) game.

• It is played on both iPhones and Android phones.

• The game is free (although a player can purchase optional game play items).

• Players create an avatar (the user’s character or alter ego).

• The avatar is displayed at the player’s location with a map of the immediate surroundings.

• As players travel around the real world, their avatar moves.

• When a Pokemon is captured, the player’s device shows an image of the Pokemon as if it were in the real world.

• Players can take screen shots of the Pokemon they find.

• Players are international and represent all ages.

My thoughts: Pokemon is just another game. Yes, I’ve read of accidents, but I feel the game can be played safely. Setting guidelines for play is important. As with texting while driving, it is dangerous to remove concentration while in a risky situation. Most of the young people I know play the game in teams. It encourages communication and sharing; the game models physical activity in the community. As with most activities, moderation is key. Take time for other activities and avoid obsession. If played with care, I think the game isn’t a big deal.

Peer Educator response: In simple words, “Pokemon Go” is basically a game that motivates kids to walk around their neighborhood and catch Pokémon that they can find. It’s actually quite beneficial because the game encourages kids to get off the couch and explore. The only dangerous part of the game is if the person playing doesn’t pay attention to their surroundings. When a person starts the game, the screen clearly says, “Remember to be alert at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings.” The game’s intent is excellent, as long as people are safe, cautious and responsible.
