Poland birthday
Orvle Kenneth Poland of Grindstone will celebrate his 100th birthday with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 1, in the courtyard at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center, 700 W. Main St., Uniontown, and a card shower. Cards can be mailed to Mr. Poland at 1126 Braznell Hill Road, Grindstone, PA 15442.
He was born August 28, 1912, in Washington County, son of Albert Riley and Mary Myrtle Miller Poland.
On September 14, 1932, he married Mable Irene Martin, who died, November 4, 1980. He then married Hazel Genevieve Shrontz Rhoades on October 1, 1981. She died October 9, 1982.
He has four children, Margaret (Roger) Neundorf of Winston-Salem, N.C., Eleanor Redfield of Akron, Ohio, James (Jerry) Poland of Richmond, Va., and John (Shirley) Poland of Advance, N.C., and four stepchildren, Robert (Barbara) Rhoades of Newville, Nancy (Donald) McDowell of Washington, Alma Hart of Washington, and the late William (Janet) Rhoades. His grandchildren are Kenneth Neundorf, Steven Neundorf, Sherry Edwards, Robert Redfield, Lynn Bogdanovich, Leslie Warner, Jenny Poland, Adrienne Schwarte, Sonya Smith, the late Peggy Ann Neundorf and the late Julia Poland, and his stepgrandchildren are Wendy Lynerd, Jill Neundorf, Carol Ann Crable, Beth Shenk, Linda Binns, Brenda Neundorf, Jim McDowell, Jennifer Popp, Shannon McMullen, Shawn Hart, Greta Ringer, Valissa Rhoades and Molly Goodman. He also has 11 great-grandchildren, 17 stepgreat-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Poland worked for Hazel Atlas No. 2, Washington Steel and Ord Postlethwait Plumbing, was a night watchman at McGuffey High School and a custodian at Trinity Middle School, from where he retired.
He is a former member of East Buffalo Presbyterian Church and a member of Christian Church, Grindstone, and McGuffey Senior Citizens Center. He enjoys working in the garden and mowing his own grass.
