The Washington Lions Club recently presented $1,000 scholarships to seniors from Washington, Trinity and McGuffey high schools. Recipients were:
• Erik Capra of McGuffey, son of Jim and Cindy Capra of Washington. He will attend Kent State University and major in architecture.
• Nathaniel Heim of Washington, son of Bob and Emily Heim of Washington. He will attend St. Francis University and major in physical therapy.
• Jennifer Maskarinec of Trinity, daughter of Dr. Bruce and Shelby Maskarinec of Washington. She plans to attend Ohio State University and major in biomedical science.
Jacob Knizner, a student at Bethlehem-Center High School, received the American Legion School Award from Marianna American Legion Post 744. The award recognizes students who display honor, courage, scholarship, leadership and Americanism. Knizner’s parents are Gary and Melissa Knizner of Marianna. .
Rachel Troscinski, a senior at Peters Township High School, has received the first Dorothy E. and James M. Humphreys Scholarship, presented by Trinity United Methodist Church in McMurray. The annual scholarship was established through a gift to the church from longtime members Harry and Marlene Humphreys in memory of Mr. Humphreys’ parents. Troscinski is a high honors student with a 4.0 grade-point average, a member of the National Honor Society, an AP scholar with honors and a four-year state leadership qualifier for Future Business Leaders of America. She received a 2013 Peters Township Character Counts Recognition Award for her leadership and volunteer tutoring in math and reading at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. In 2012, she completed a biomedical research project and presented her findings through the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Summer Academy. Troscinski is a three-year letter winner for the champtionship Peters Township girls soccer team. She has volunteered at vacation Bible school and in the Appalachia Service Project ministry. Troscinski will major in chemical engineering at Purdue University. Her parents are Kendra and Mark Troscinski.
Leslie Zoeller, a fifth-grader at Claysville Elementary School, recently placed first among fifth- and sixth-graders in American Legion Post 639 Essay Contest on “What Freedom Do I Enjoy the Most.” She was awarded a $25 gift card. Her parents are John and Laura Zoeller of Prosperity.
