“Is it worth it?” This is the question posed by the anti-texting-and-driving video produced by McGuffey High School senior Jesse Vensel. His video was selected as one of this year’s winning entries in the Edgar Snyder & Associates “Words to be Heard” Scholarship Contest. Lindsay Spinabelli, a senior at Peters Township High School, also received a scholarship for her public service announcements that share the same message: “Distracted driving affects not only the texting offender, but also other passengers, drivers, as well as family and friends.” The contest challenges students in Western Pennsylvania to create programs discouraging their peers from underage drinking, drunken driving or texting while driving. Students had the option of submitting entries in the form of videos, PowerPoint presentations, websites, essays or other creative formats. Attorney Edgar Snyder presented a $2,500 scholarship to both Spinabelli and Vensel at an awards dinner. Vensel’s video portrays a series of heavy-hearted interviews with family and friends impacted by the loss of a family member who was killed while texting and driving. Vensel plans to attend Pfeiffer University in North Carolina to study accounting. As an officer in her school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions program, Spinabelli used what she learned there to create the PSAs. Spinabelli plans to attend Penn State University to study public relations or marketing.
