State Rep. Brandon Neuman, D-North Strabane Township, recently was awarded the Bob O’Connor Junior Achievement Leadership Award for his efforts to inspire and support young people as they enter the global economy.

Neuman helped organize the STEM – Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics – Initiative Forum that linked local students with global business leaders from Chevron, Shell and Westinghouse, along with education experts from California University of Pennsylvania, the Carnegie Science Center and Junior Achievement.

Neuman also has been active in pushing community participation among young people. He recently introduced House Resolution 508, designating Oct. 26 as “Make a Difference Day” in Pennsylvania. The day of community service has been embraced by local high school students who have scheduled volunteer projects throughout the area.

The award is named in honor of Pittsburgh’s late mayor, a longtime supporter of Junior Achievement. The award is presented annually to public servants for their support of JA’s mission to empower young people in their communities.
