Canonsburg educator to receive honor

Dr. Gregory A. Taranto, principal at Canonsburg Middle School, will be honored with the 2013 Frank S. Manchester Excellence in Journalism Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals at the PAESSP conference at the Penn State Conference Center Hotel in State College in October.
The award is presented to an individual who has been published in the Pennsylvania Administrator magazine and recognizes authors who demonstrate the commitment to quality informational services to PAESSP members and who reflect the standards established by Manchester during his tenure as executive director of PAESSP.
Taranto has published more than 20 articles and has served as a member of the PAESSP editorial review board since 2012.
Taranto has been a school administrator for 10 years, serving as CMS principal for eight. He has received several recognitions during his tenure at CMS, including:
• Finalist, 2011, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s Outstanding Young Educator Award;
• Winner, 2012, Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s Research and Publication Award for his research on the development of a new teacher induction model;
• PAESSP Middle Level Principal of the Year, 2012.
Taranto also is an adjunct faculty member of California University of Pennsylvania’s Administrator Program for Principals.
He earned a bachelor of science degree from Slippery Rock University, a master of science degree from East Stroudsburg University and a master of education degree from California University of Pennsylvania.
He received his doctorate in instructional management and leadership from Robert Morris University.
