The Peters Township Education Foundation recently awarded 2014 Granting Educators Opportunities grants totaling more than $6,700 to support education in classrooms across the district.

The foundation received 14 grant proposals, and five were fulfilled.

Winners are:

• Colleen Rooney, Pleasant Valley Elementary School, instructional support. Rooney will receive an iPad for her elementary classroom to assist and motivate students struggling in math and reading.

• Linda Diesing, McMurray Elementary School, classroom support teacher. Diesing will receive three iPads to use in her classroom to help students with poor reading skills through programs designed to build comprehension and reading fluency.

• Renee Brown, middle school, language arts. Brown will receive an iPad for her classroom to more fully integrate the flipped classroom environment for her students. Using the video capabilities of the iPad, she will be able to create interactive videos for the students that will enable her to customize classroom time in areas that need additional review.

• Counseling department, high school. Counselors will receive two iPads to update their College Resource Center to make students’ access to the Naviance software and other college and career research tools quicker and easier.

• Ashley Vollmer and Kelly Hruby, high school, social studies. Hruby and Vollmer will receive five iPads for their 10th- and 11th-grade social studies classes.

In PTEF’s first three years, more than $23,000 has been awarded to support education in Peters Township.
