As part of its annual Law Day programming, the Washington County Bar Association recenlty provided a one-hour “Now That You are 18: Legal Issues in the Real World” program to 95 seniors at Burgettstown Junior/Senior High School.
Primary presenters were attorney Michele Haggerty, former president of the bar association, and John Tilley of the Washington Area Federal Credit Union.
The program and accompanying informational booklets are provided for free by the bar association to any high school in Washington County. “Turning 18” addresses the issues faced by students who, as 18-year-olds, need to know about legal responsibilities that accompany adult activities, such as using credit cards, renting an apartment, getting married, signing contracts and using the Internet. The program was held earlier this spring at Bethlehem-Center by attorney Rachel Lozosky and at Ringgold by attorney Christina DeMarco-Breeden.
