Washington County has been named a 2015 Groundwater Guardian Community by the Groundwater Foundation of Lincoln, Neb., in recognition of its efforts to protect local groundwater supplies.

The Groundwater Foundation’s Groundwater Guardian program encourages and recognizes local groundwater protection and education activities.

Washington County has been a Groundwater Guardian since 1995. In 2015, the county implemented a variety of activities, including conducting groundwater monitoring concurrent with its stream monitoring project.

The team monitors 20 streams throughout the county, most of which are groundwater-fed, to establish baseline readings for streams and groundwater in the region.
