Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh will launch its 50th anniversary celebration with a BIG 50th Kickoff event from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at AlphaLab Gear in East Liberty.

The first campaign will be to recruit 50 male Big Brothers in 50 days.

“More than 80 percent of our waiting list is boys, and the need for stable male mentors is ongoing,” said Jan Glick, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, which serves about 1,200 children annually in Allegheny, Greene and Washington counties.

The fifth annual Celebrate Coalitions awards also will be presented to individuals and groups that have offered exemplary service to Big Brothers Big Sisters, including YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, Tech Shop Pittsburgh and Sabrina Saunders, executive director of Strong Women, Strong Girls.
