Martial artist teaches his dream
For some people, teaching others about their passion is just a dream. For Jonathan Whaley, it’s a reality.
Whaley, aka Lee, is a 26-year-old resident of Hickory. His lifelong ambition is to help students achieve their potential by teaching them martial arts.
Whaley’s interest in the sport dates back to his childhood. As a 12-year-old, Whaley was fascinated by the large number of karate films released at the time. The movies inspired him to attempt the moves on his own. Unfortunately, Whaley’s work ethic held him back as a child.
“I didn’t have as much of a drive as I had when I was older,” he said.
But the aspiring trainee refused to give up. For years, he devoted himself to perfecting his skills and has trained up to six days a week in hopes of mastering the art.
As he continued to work his way through the ranks, Whaley eventually transitioned from student to teacher at another Washington martial arts school. Once he felt he had learned all his current system could provide, he decided to take his education into his own hands.
Whaley founded the Edification Academy of Martial Arts in July. The studio uses an original style based on Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do and Jeet Kune Do, along with the instructor’s previous learnings. Lee now teaches a variety of classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, including lessons for various belt ranks, kickboxing and Tai chi.
While he has only been running his own dojo for a short time, Whaley is already used to his new role. Teaching on his own “doesn’t really feel any different,” he said.
Whaley has been determined to follow his dreams ever since he was a child. His latest achievement are another step toward his goals.
