The Frank L. Melega Art Museum, 69 Market St., Brownsville, will present “Surface – Emergence – Explosive,” an exhibition featuring the work of artists C. Chisholm Cohen, Mara Light and the late Jerome (Jerry) Melega, Nov. 1 through Dec. 13.
An opening reception will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 1. Free parking will be available.
Part of the exhibition is a special installation in memoriam of Frank L. Melega’s younger son, Jerry, who died Sept. 12 at age 77. The display features two paintings by Jerry and four portraits of Jerry by his father, plus memorabilia from Jerry’s career as a world-renowned jazz pianist. He was a member of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd. In Las Vegas, he accompanied Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack.
The exhibition is completed by two different, yet in some ways similar, painters. Cohen and Light both create powerful and engaging artwork, although one is abstract and the other includes representational images. Each artist was asked to choose one word to represent their artwork in the exhibition. Jerry Melega’s word was chosen by his brother, Frank. Hence, the show’s title.
The museum is open weekdays, plus Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Call 724-785-9331 to schedule appointments or to obtain weekday hours.
