California University of Pennsylvania will open its homecoming weekend with “Our Showcase of Stars” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 Friday in Steele Hall Mainstage Theatre.

Headlining the variety show are the Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers, a popular Appalachian-style bluegrass band from Washington County. Well-known on the East Coast’s Americana music circuit, the band recently returned from a national tour.

Hear Tonight, alternative rockers who have played Pittsburgh’s Hard Rock Café and other regional venues, also will perform. The band includes students from Cal U.’s commercial music technology program.

Also on tap are a high-energy routine by steppers from Cal U.’s Alpha Phi Alpha chapter; a cappella groups Vulcanize, Acapella Stella and Isolated Incident; and the Young and Gifted Gospel Choir.

Admission is $10. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling the Steele Hall box office at 724-938-5943. Proceeds benefit the Student Scholarship Fund for Academics, Arts and Athletics at Cal U.

Homecoming activities continue Saturday, with the homecoming parade of bands and floats at noon. At 3 p.m., the football team will play the Clarion Golden Eagles at Adamson Stadium. The homecoming king and queen will be crowned at halftime.
