Giant Oaks Garden Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to three high school seniors who will further their education in a field of environmental sciences.

Recipients are Claire Dougherty of Mt. Lebanon High School, Helena Wolenski of Trinity Area High School and Lillian Fornof of Peters Township High School. Each has demonstrated outstanding academics, leadership skills and service through which the scholarship committee learned of their desire to fulfill the National Garden Club pledge “to protect and conserve the natural resources of the planet earth and promise to protect education so we may become caretakers of our air, water, forests. land, and wildlife.”

Fornof will major in biology at Swathmore College, Wolenski will major in environmental science at Miami University of Ohio and Dougherty will major in biology at Dartmouth College.

This year, a third scholarship was awarded in memory of former member Cheryl Kelly, by her family. For more than 20 years, the Giant Oaks Garden Club has offered at least one scholarship to a high school senior who plans to study a facet of the environment.
