Workshops address chronic conditions
“Living Better with Chronic Conditions” will be presented from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Aug. 23 through Sept. 27, at Center on the Hill Senior Center, 100 Summit Road, Belle Vernon.
The free program is offered by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging’s Prime-Time Health program.
The interactive workshops, developed by Stanford University for people 60 and older who are living with a chronic condition, will include techniques to deal with frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals; nutrition; decision-making, and how to evaluate new treatments.
In addition to weekly incentives, each participant who completes the program will receive a copy of the companion book, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” along with an audio relaxation CD, “Relaxation for Mind and Body: Pathways to Healing.”

According to the National Council on Aging, 80 people of people over the age of 60 live with at least one chronic condition. Medicare statistics show that 68.4 percent have two or more chronic conditions, and 36.4 percent have four or more.
