Wash High teachers talk inspiration
Teaching is a job that has been around for centuries. Over the years, the environment and style of teaching have changed.
Something that hasn’t changed is that teachers all have a reason for teaching. Whether a teacher loves working with kids, a specific subject or just teaching in general, they’re inspired in some way to help others learn.
“When trying to decide what to study in college, I thought that studying history would keep me interested for four years. Once I tried teaching in college, I found out that I actually liked to teach, too,” said Ms. Katy Hofrichter, a history teacher at Washington High School.
When asked her favorite aspect of teaching, Hofrichter said she loves seeing students get excited about the material and when students realize they have the capability to do well on difficult assignments.
Jessica Ott, a Wash High Spanish teacher, made the decision to become a teacher because she loved learning Spanish in high school and loved how it connected her to other cultures and different people. Becoming a teacher allowed her to share her enthusiasm for the language and even help students connect with other cultures.
“My favorite part of teaching is when I get to hear from former students and hear how my class had helped them in their future,” Ott said. “There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you had an influence on a student’s life.”
