There’s no shortage of newsmakers in today’s traditional journey to yesteryear via the archives of area newspapers.

Monday, Feb 25, 1946

New Eagle PTA will present a “Talkie Movie,” “The Cisco Kid And The Lady,” starring Caesar Romero, Mary Beth Hughes and Dana Andrews at the New Eagle Firemen’s Hall on Wednesday. Admission is only 25 cents.

Richeyville Memorial Post 811 of the American Legion was formally created yesterday in ceremonies at the community building. Sixty-six charter members were involved and the following were sworn in as officers by District Commander Abe Ruben of Donora: Stan Tyukodi, commander; Mike Muchko, first vice commander; Richard Lutes, second vice commander; Walter Clish, adjutant; Nicholas Kashes. finance officer; Leslie Smith, chaplain; John Lutes, historian.

J.D. Woodward’s Musics ran their record to 11-1 with a 42-37 win over the Duquesne Amvets in a Pittsburgh Independent Basketball League game at the Charleroi Junior High gym. Joe Moussiaux led the Musics with 20 points.

Saturday, Feb. 25, 1956

Frankie Barr and his Orchestra will provide music Sunday at a dance at the Sons of Labor Ballroom in Herminie.

William R. Benedetti of Lynnwood, a teacher and coach in the Monongahela School System, was the guest speaker at a meeting of Belle Vernon Rotary Club in the social rooms of First Methodist Church.

Centerville topped Mapletown 59-51 in a special playoff for the Section 18-B basketball championship last night before 1,000 fans at Jefferson. Centerville now advances to the WPIAL Tournament Monday against Section 17 titlist Perryopolis at Donora. Johnny Bozik of Centerville led all scorers with 22 points.

Paced by Chuck McCann, who extended his unbeaten streak to nine straight matches, Charleroi High’s wrestlers defeated Irwin 40-8. Others posting wins for coach Mike Booth’s Cougars were Billy Moussiaux, Joe DeFilippo, Blair Cramer, Paul Buckholt, Billy Polacek, Jim Lambert, Harry Dunkerton and Joe Falbo.

Friday, Feb. 25, 1966

Representatives of over 20 communities in the area will meet Saturday at Monongahela Valley Country Club to discuss plans for construction of the proposed Mon Valley Expressway.

Quarterback Norm Pellegrini and running back Jim Brumfield of Elizabeth-Forward High have accepted grants-in-aid to attend Indiana State University at Terre Haute, it was announced by Louis “Bimbo” Cecconi, a Donora native now serving as an assistant coach and assistant professor of physical education at ISU.

Captain Marvin Davis led Monessen Junior High Schoo to a share of the Section 3 title with California as he scored 246 points in 16 games. Others on coach Frederic Feldman’s team that posted a 10-6 overall record and an 8-2 league mark were Charles Rocco, Everett Wall, Walter Ezerski, Richard Yanachak, Richard Wotkowski, Robert Jones. Gerald Williams, Derrick Jones, John Prezgar and John Gaspich. Bill Hunter Bill Bradley and Ray Wotkowski were student managers.

Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1976

North Belle Vernon residents are preparing for a huge celebration tomorrow marking the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the community as a borough. Mayor Edward J. Lyons Sr. is encouraging all townspeople to participate. Fire sirens will be sounded at noon and church bells will be rung. St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church will play patriotic music throughout the day.

Administrative operations at Fox Grocery Company of Belle Vernon will increase on or about April 1 when Foodland International relocates its headquarters from Atlanta, Ga., to the district facility in Rostraver Township.

Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1986

Carol Smith has been elected president of the Friends of the Donora Public Library. Other leaders for the coming year are Elizabeth White, vice president; Betty Campa, secretary; Ralph Vasco, treasurer; Nellie Hogg and Loretta Michaux, co-chairs of ways and means; Glenn Howis, publicity, and Martha Emler, telephone committee.

Charleroi Area High School Student Council added another Cougar Print to its Student Council Art Collection. The latest artwork, “Rocky Mountain Chase” by Guy Coheleach, was dedicated to the memory of Joseph “Cougar Joe” Danesi, a longtime CAHS sports fan who died Feb. 6, 1985. High school principal Stanley Milchovich presented the painting to Student Council officers Michael Kolodychak, president; Anna Valla, vice president; Fonda Chang, secretary, and John Gray, treasurer.

Sewickley Academy eliminated defending champion Monessen from the WPIAL Class A basketball tournament 60-57 in a quarterfinal round game at Ringgold. Lad Hudac led the Panthers with 25 point and 16 rebounds, while Ronza Ford had 20 points for the Greyhounds.

Child Passenger Safety Week ended at Monongahela Valley Hospital as AAA West Penn/West Virginia donated a car safety seat to the hospital. Taking part in the presentation were Doloris Platter, nurse manager of the hospital’s obstetrics unit; Naomi Bove, chairman of the Kids In Safety Seats program coordinated by the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources; Estelle Kalnicky, co-chairman of the KISS project, and J.J. Miller, safety advisor/public affairs with AAA West Penn/West Virginia.

Monessen advanced to the semifinals of the WPIAL Class A girls basketball tournament last night with a 65-62 win over Monaca at the Trinity gym in Washington. Perrial Pearson (18) and Kelly Mornak (11) led coach Major Corley’s Greyhounds.

Area wrestlers ready for action in the WPIAL Class AA semifinals at Charleroi Area today are Dave Grillo, Vinnie Destefano, Casey Gavazzi, Corey Hazy, Coleman Kirtley and Ethan Radomile, all of Charleroi; Jacob Weslager, Don Tasser, Zak Bell and Shawn Dilmore of Belle Vernon Area, and Charles Wosettler of Bentworth.
