National Pike DAR honors students
The National Pike chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution presented awards to students in Trinity Middle School, Trinity High School, John F. Kennedy Catholic School and McGuffey High School May 9 at First Baptist Church, Washington. Students were recognized if five categories: American History, Youth Citizenship, Good Citizen, Junior American Citizens and JROTC.
• The theme for the Junior American Citizens contest was “Celebrate America.” Students were asked to consider what makes them proud about America, what their family has contributed to make America great and to define American heroes. Students were judged on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of material, interest, originality, grammar, spelling, punctuation and neatness. Sixth-grade winners from JFK were the banner group entry by Mayleigh Zrimsek, Megan Gray, Janel Marie Gilmer, Tayah Swanson and Isabella Naddeo (first on the local level and in Pennsylvania); a poem by Macy Comfort (first on the local level and in Pennsylvania and second in the Eastern division); the community service group entry by Olivia Thomas, Mia Altman and Christine Smith (first on the local level, Pennsylvania and Eastern division and second in the National division); and a photo essay by Rubie Seng (first on the local level, Pennsylvania, Eastern and National divisons).
• Trinity Middle School Youth Citizenship winners were selected by the Trinity Middle School social studies department based on the DAR qualifications of honor, service, patriotism, courage and leadership as observed and evaluated by classroom teachers. Eighth-grade winners were presented a medal and a certificate. Winners were Jax Banco, Andrew Ciotto, Brent Clutter, Ann Kozak, Lynzee Morris and Nancy Xiao.
• Trinity Middle School Excellence in American History winners were selected by the Trinity Middle School social studies Department based on the DAR qualifications of academic achievement, motivation and personal interest in American history as observed and evaluated by classroom teachers. Seventh-grade winners were presented a medal and a certificate. Winners were Lucas Jones, Bethany Koman, Emma Malinak and Kyle Vonscio. Nancy Racunas is the Chapter Chairman for American
• Good Citizen winners were Trinity High School senior Delaney Elling and McGuffey High School senior Zachary Nicolella.
• An additional award was presented through the National Defense committee. The National Pike chapter awarded a bronze JROTC medal and certificate to Trinity High School senior Cadet Ryan Hornickel.
