Former Claysville pastor turning 104

The family of former Claysville pastor Mary Sprowls will host a surprise open house in celebration of her 104th birthday.

The open house will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. March 14 at the Claysville American Legion, 208 Main St., Claysville. The family asks that gifts be omitted.

Mary Jane Chase was born March 15, 1916, in East Finley Township, the second youngest of Fred and Elizabeth Grandon Chase’s eight children.

On April 20, 1936, she married Harold “Brick” Sprowls, who died in 1999 at age 84.

The couple had five children, two of whom survive: Larry Sprowls and Sue Kite, with whom Mary Sprowls lives in Shenandoah, Va. The Sprowls’ three other children died: Betty Ann Plants and Charles and John Sprowls.

Mary Sprowls was former pastor of Roadside Chapel in Claysville.
