Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Auxiliary Unit 175 presented certificates to essay winners from Washington Park Elementary School, John F. Kennedy Catholic School, Trinity Middle and High schools and Washington High School The theme was “How Do We Keep Lincoln’s Promise To Our Veterans and Their Families?”

Winners were the following:

Third/fourth grades: First place: Geoffrey Brown, son of Geoffrey Brown and grandson of Carol and James Brown, a student at Washington Park Elementary School; second place: Gloria Rush, daughter of BJ and Jennifer Rush, a student at Washington Park Elementary School

Fifth/sixth grades: First place: Taviaire Vereen, son of Tiffina Holt and Vernon Vereen and stepfather Robert Sutton, a student at Washington Park Elementary School; second place:Tyra Sparks Gatling, daughter of Tara Sparks Gatling and David Gatling, a student at Washington Park Elementary School

Seventh/eighth grades: First place: Isabel Beichner, daughter of Mark and Jennifer Beichner, a student at John F. Kennedy Catholic School; second place: Kayla Post, daughter of Renee Hardie-Post and Robert Post, a student at Trinity Middle School

Ninth/10th grades: First place: Maria Cimino, daughter of Pete and Amy Cimino, a student at Trinity High School; second place:Jordan Sheppard (no picture available), son of Maura Sheppard, a student at Trinity High School

11th/12th grades: First place: Sadie Presto, daughter of Joe and Jen Presto, a student at Trinity High School; second place: Andrew Mercer, son of Gene and Michele Mercer, a student at Washington High School
