A farewell to Flipside

Nearly five years ago, I walked through the doors of the Observer-Reporter for the first time.
My mother found the newspaper’s Young Observers program through an ad. I decided to give it a try. There was no way I could know then that Flipside would grow to become the major influence on my life that it is today.
I’ve always had an affinity for writing and Flipside has given me countless opportunities to develop my talents in new ways. When I first joined the Young Observers in Fall of 2011, my skills were lackluster compared to where they are now. My experience was limited to school assignments and casual stories, so I still had plenty to learn about how writing works in a professional setting. As a senior now trying to survive exams, college prep and two AP courses, this knowledge has been invaluable to me.
But Flipside has been about far more than just writing for me. It’s forced me to leave my comfort zone and try new, more rewarding things. I’ve been able to experiment with interviews, reviews, roundtables and photojournalism. I’ve used my platform for the greater good by discussing charities and fundraisers. I’ve even had the opportunity to reach out to a favorite internet personality for a personal profile. All of these experiences, I believe, have guided me over the past few years.
But, most important of all are the people I have met through the program. When I first joined the group, I was severely introverted and reserved. Today, that hasn’t changed too much. However, Flipside has given me the chance to expand my social circle and learn to be comfortable in an environment foreign to a longtime online student like myself. I’m not usually sentimental, but while the knowledge and recognition I’ve gained from Flipside have been instrumental to my success as a student, I’ll never forget the people I’ve met and the time we’ve spent together.
Nearly five years ago, I walked through the doors of the Observer-Reporter for the first time. I was scared, inexperienced and withdrawn. As I look toward my future, I know now that Flipside has changed me for the better.
