Each summer for 20 years, Little Lake Theatre in Canonsburg has hosted a two-week summer camp for middle and high-school students. This summer, the theatre is once again opening its doors for young actors.

The Little Lake Theatre summer camp allows students to learn basic acting skills and see what it’s like to be on stage. The first week consists of fun games and exercises that teach the participants about skills needed for acting. The second week prepares the kids for a production. Students must learn the script for their roles in a short play or skit.

The camp ends with one last performance consisting of all the scenes that the students rehearsed. Last summer, the show also contained musical numbers for both younger and older students.

Arya Pandit has been participating in the summer camp for two years. He first signed up to find out what acting was like. After his first year, he decided he would return.

“I liked the final day, where we got to show off everything we learned,” Pandit said. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget that experience.”

Jena Oberg, Little Lake production manager, is in charge of the summer camp program. She has many years of acting experience, having been involved with the art since fifth grade. She now intends to pass down her knowledge to a new generation of actors and actresses.

“I love the creativity that each kid brings (and) watching kids who were shy learning how to be confident and express themselves,” Oberg said. “I sort of just love seeing actors develop.”

Oberg’s program not only teaches children the skills they need to succeed on stage, but also throughout life.

“They learn how to work as a team, they learn how to be comfortable expressing themselves, they learn how to think creatively (and) they learn that ideas are important,” Oberg said. “I think all of those skills come out of participation in a theater program like our summer camp.”

The Little Lake summer camp runs from July 11 to 23, and Aug. 1 to 13. Registration is open. For more information, Oberg can be contacted by phone at 724-272-3968, or by email at jenakoberg@gmail.com.
