Margo Bonal, a homeschooled student from Hickory, won first place in the Western Pennsylvania region in Pennsylvania American Water’s 14th annual “Protect Our Watersheds” art contest. The company received several hundred entries from fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders. Bonal earned first prize for her artwork depicting a picnic along a stream, with the reminder to “look ahead to your watershed” by properly disposing of litter.

Four area students received $2,500 National Merit Scholarships. They were selected from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. Winners are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Winners are Cara Lee Price of Bridgeville and Eric L. Song, students at South Fayette High School; Dylan J. Grosz of McMurray, a student at Sewickley Academy; and McKenna A. Barney of Venetia, a student at Indian Springs School.
