Mark A. Gardner, son of Lawren and Katherine Gardner of Avella, was named to the dean’s list at Penn State Beaver, where he is majoring in mechanical engineering. He is a 2016 graduate of Avella Junior/Senior High School.

Shaina Marie Hilsey of Garnet Valley, president of the Student Government Association at California University of Pennsylvania, was one of three student leaders confirmed to serve on the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The board is responsible for planning and coordinating the development and operation of the state system. The board establishes broad fiscal, personnel and educational policies. Hilsey is a junior sport management major with a concentration in professional golf management and a minor in business administration. Hilsey also is a member of the Student Association Inc. board of directors, and has participated in the Big Event and Relay for Life the past two years and has attended multiple leadership conferences. She is a member of the Cal U. Professional Golf Management Student Society and the women’s golf team. She served internships with the Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown, Mass., and Wildwood Golf and Country Club in Cape May Court House, N.J. Hilsey works in the Office of Exercise Science and Sport Studies at the university.

Amber Welch recently was inducted into the Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society at Point Park University, where she is pursuing a bachelor of science in criminal justice. She is a graduate of Ringgold High School, and her parents are John and Kathy Welch of Donora.
