Spring cleaning at the humane society Volunteers sought for Comcast Cares Day
Spring is the time of year when many people wash away the dirt and grime that accumulated during the winter, or perhaps add a fresh coat of paint to a door where the color has dulled.
It is no different at Washington Area Humane Society on Route 136 in North Strabane Township, where volunteers will gather from 8 a.m. to noon April 22 as part of Comcast Cares Day.
The humane society again was selected this year by Comcast as part of the company’s 16th annual worldwide effort to give back to the community. Comcast employees volunteer alongside others in the community to make improvements.
“We are hoping to have church groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and others join our humane society volunteers and staff,” said Kelly Proudfit, humane society executive director. “Comcast approached us again this year, and I was so happy when they called us. The more volunteers we have, the more money the humane society will get.”
This is the second consecutive year the humane society has been selected, Proudfit added.
“Last year, painting was done on the inside and outside of the building,” she said. “This year, I hope to paint and repair the benches on the outside and work on some other projects, like doing some landscaping and cleaning.
“Last year, we had 300 volunteers,” Proudfit added. “It is a big, coordinated effort. And it gives people a chance to see what we are doing at the humane society.”
Comcast also donates money to the shelter for each volunteer who comes out to work that day, Proudfit said. The Springhouse will be supplying breakfast and drinks for the volunteers.
