Washington student musicians to perform
Washington Jr./Sr. High Band will perform familiar tunes and melodies at 7 p.m. Wednesday, featuring 165 students in grades 7-12.
Director Dave Dayton said that each group is unique in its talents and abilities, and as the students move from junior through senior high, the selections obviously “become more involved and difficult to learn.”
“But, as they gain the experience, they can further showcase the quality of the band members’ talents,” he said.
Eighth-grade students will perform “Sounds of the Season,” a Christmas medley. The Jazz Ensemble will perform “A Rockin’ Merry Christmas” and an arrangement of “Angels We Have Heard on High.”
The Steel Band, one of the most followed bands in the area, will play “Carol of the Bells” and a “Pan Christmas Medley.” The more traditional numbers will be performed when the Symphonic Band takes the stage for “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”
In addition to the instrumental groups, the audience will be treated to the singers in the 7th- and 8th-grade choirs, under the direction of Mark Poole, and the high school’s Choralaires, directed by Sarah Boice.
“The musical entertainment and enjoyment of the holiday season is something that all should experience,” said Dayton. “We keep this concert free to encourage all families and the community to come out together for a great evening of music and singing.”
The concert will include activities, like ornament and candy cane decorating. A hot chocolate bar will be available from 6 to 6:40 p.m. There will also be special giveaways and drawings, including gift cards and a complete Christmas tree.
