Waynesburg U. students performing service during winter break
WAYNESBURG – More than two dozen Waynesburg University students, along with several faculty and staff members have or are participating in service trips during their winter break.
Kristen Stone, a network analyst for information technology services, and Carin Camp of the campus security office led seven students to Aransas Pass, Texas, from Dec. 16-22 to partner with the All Hands Volunteers to assist in continuing relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey.
Stone helped organize the trip after seeing devastating news footage earlier this year. Students cleared trees, removed debris and helped clean and repair damaged property.
Ten students, led by Kylee Sargent, help desk coordinator, and Kerry Purnell, assistant registrar, will serve at E.P. Roberts Primary School in Nassau, Bahamas.
The trip. from Jan. 6 to 13, will have students assisting in teaching a variety of grade levels at a primary school on the island, and will also be visiting a local orphanage to work with children.
Sargent said she hopes the students benefit from working with kids in an environment very different from the ones they are used to in the United States.
Chad Sherman, assistant professor of communication, and Melinda Roeder-Skrbin, instructor of communication, will lead eight students to serve at Trans World Radio in Bonaire from Jan. 6 to 13.
While in Bonaire, students will assist TWR in recording radio liners, designing graphics and producing public relations and marketing materials. The students will also help promote the launch of TWR’s new transmitter in late January.
