The Canonsburg pickleball community is uniting to raise money for the Armory Youth Center.

Canonsburg Pickleball Group will host a tournament, Pickleball for a Cause, from 12:30 to 8 p.m. March 18.

Proceeds will go toward the installation of a kitchen in the youth center, which offers afterschool academic and athletic programs for Canonsburg youth, and includes a gymnasium and a recreation area.

One of America’s fastest-growing pastimes, pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis, and is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net.

Canonsburg Pickleball promotes and teaches the game to players of all ages.

The pickleball group plays at the Armory throughout the winter, and, according to Doug McKenery, one of the founders of Canonsburg Pickleball, the building will serve as the permanent indoor home for Canonsburg Pickleball when the pickleball club registers with the United States of America Pickleball Association.

McKenery said the pickleball group is grateful to JR Gardner, owner of the youth center, for providing an indoor playing facility.

“We appreciate what he did for us, and what he has done for the kids in this community,” McKenery said. “We’re very fortunate to have this center for our youth, and we wanted to do something to show our appreciation. We’re hoping this fundraiser will help get the kitchen project moving forward.”

The tournament will include an instructional session for beginners from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Cost for the tournament is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12 years old.

To register for the tournament or for more information, contact Stan Hall at 724-746-2060 or stanley137@hotmail.com, or McKenery at 724-746-3154 or ddjmck@comcast.net.
