CAS offering free income tax filing assistance
Community Action Southwest will offer free, basic, online income tax filing assistance to qualified working households in Washington and Greene counties who earned less than $54,000 in 2016.
VITA sites will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays in Waynesburg and 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays in Washington, Jan. 24 through April 5. To learn if a taxpayer qualifies for the program, call PA 2-1-1 Southwest. Representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Taxpayers should bring the following to their appointments: valid photo identification, a Social Security card for every person on the tax return and all 2016 income documents. To receive a refund by direct deposit, bank account information must be provided in the form of an official document from the bank with the routing and account numbers on it, such as a check.
The program is unable to assist senior citizens who rely on Social Security and retirement pensions. They are served at Tax Counseling for the Elderly sites.
