Giant Oaks Garden Club in Peters Township recently awarded three $1,000 scholarships.

Lily Tarwater and Cameron Lammers, recent Peters Township High School graduates, received the awards from the club, and McKenzie Mungai, a Trinity High School graduate, received the Cheryl Kelly Memorial Scholarship sponsored by John Kelly and family.

Each of the students has expressed a desire to make a difference in the environment.

Tarwater plans to major in environmental sciences at Dickinson College. In high school, Tarwater was a member of the National Honor Society, Interact, Spanish Club and Kickline Dance Center, editor-in-chief of the Smokers Signal News Magazine, treasurer of Student Activists for the Environment and chairwoman of the Washington Hospital Visitors Information.

Lammers plans to major in civil engineering at Penn State University. In high school, he was president of the Interact Club for four years, organized the student-oriented blood drive at school, chaired the Peters Township Walk for Autism and was a member of the math, Spanish and ski clubs. He also played trumpet in the Peters Township High School band. Last summer, Lammers attended a weeklong Environmental Engineering Academy at St. Francis University.

Mungai plans to attend Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. In high school, she participated in ECO Camp at Carlow Univerity, the Women of Spirit Institute for Science, the Project Feeder Watch through Cornell University and Project Monarch Watch. Mungai also was a presenter at the National Mother Earth News Conference and won the Trinity Science Fair. At the Washington County Fair, she placed first in a variety of projects, and she won the 4-H Ladder Achievement Award for five years.
