ROGERSVILLE – Greene County couples who missed their prom or want to relive that night will have the opportunity March 25 at West Greene High School.

The school is hosting an adult prom with dinner and dancing as a fundraiser for the district’s peer mentoring program, which allows high school students to mentor middle school students who may be struggling with attendance or grades.

“We’re trying to offer a safe, fun event for the community,” said Tim Burnes, a West Greene teacher and organizer of the event.

During the past year, the program has been funded through a grant, but if the district wants to continue the program, it will likely need $10,000 to $12,000 a year to fund it, Burnes said. He said he hopes the adult prom will become a main fundraiser for the program, which allows for special mentoring field trips for students and hosting special speakers.

Burnes said the event is open to all Greene County adults, and child care for children ages 3 and older will be provided by junior and senior students and three school advisers.

Doors to the high school gym will open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner, catered by Texas Roadhouse, at 6 p.m., and dancing from 7 to 10:30. Burnes said there will be raffle baskets and “give-aways” throughout the night.

“We’re not requiring prom gowns and tuxedos, but it is a semiformal event, so we prefer people don’t wear T-shirts and jeans,” Burnes said.

Burnes said the event is perfect for people who either never attended a prom or didn’t attend with their significant other. So far, 65 people have made reservations.

“We had one man call for tickets, and his wife had never been able to attend prom, so he bought tickets to surprise her,” Burnes said. “We’ve also had some high school sweethearts who want to relive the special moments.”

Tickets are $40 per person or $70 per couple, and they can be purchased at the high school or reserved by calling 724-499-5191.
