Clay Kilgore to speak at historical society
The Jefferson Township Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in the White Church Building, 11 Fire Road, EldervilleBurgettstown.
Guest speaker will be Clay Kilgore, executive director of the Washington County Historical Society. He will discuss “Madonna of the Trail: More Than Just a Memorial to Pioneer Mothers.”
The program will look at the origins of the Madonna of the Trail memorials. Starting with the Old Trails Association and moving forward to the efforts of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the project to develop a coast-to-coast national road culminated with the installation of 12 statues dedicated to the spirt of the pioneer women of the United States. These monuments have come to signify even more.
All ages are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
