The Washington County Community Foundation has announced the creation of the Friends of MarkWest Scholarship Fund II, with a $50,000 gift to support graduating seniors from Avella, Burgettstown, Chartiers-Houston, Fort Cherry, McGuffey and Trinity school districts.

Scholarships will be made available to students attending a certificate program related to the natural gas industry or those pursuing associate or bachelor’s degrees in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.

As the largest midstream service provider in the Marcellus Shale with over 4.9 Bcf/d of natural gas processing capacity at six major complexes, MarkWest Energy Partners is engaged in the gathering, processing and transportation of natural gas, and the transportation, fractionation, storage and marketing of NGLs.

“In keeping with our commitment to support educational endeavors in the local community, MarkWest is pleased to support post-secondary education programs that closely align with MarkWest’s operations,” said Robert McHale, manager of special projects.

“We are grateful to our many friends whose generosity has helped to make this scholarship fund possible,” McHale said.

Scholarships for certificate programs are valued at $1,000; scholarships for associate degrees are valued at $2,000; and scholarships for bachelor’s degrees are valued at $4,000.

Associate and bachelor’s degree scholarships are payable at $1,000 per year, provided recipients continue to remain enrolled at the college or university in a STEM field and maintain good academic standing.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the online Post-Secondary Scholarship Application available at www.wccf.net. Additionally, students must provide hard copies of their supporting documentation to the WCCF office at 1253 Route 519, P.O. Box 308, Eighty Four, PA 15330.

All components of the application must be received by April 1 in order for any student to be considered for a scholarship.

The mission of the Washington County Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life in Washington County by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. It manages both temporary and permanent scholarship funds and has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships to local students.
