Canon-McMillan wins Envirothon

The Canon-McMillan blue team recently won the 2017 Washington County Envirothon, which was held at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Nineteen teams from Washington County competed in the high school competition, which features teams of five students testing their knowledge on five environmental topics.

This year, Canon MacMillian School District took the top two spots, with the Canon-Mac blue team scoring 390 points, the highest winning score in six years, and the Canon-Mac gold team amassing 374 points. The McGuffey gold team finished third with 365 points.

Other teams that competed were Avella, Bethlehem-Center, California, Chartiers-Houston, Peters Township, Ringgold and Washington. Teams from these schools competed in the following topics: Aquatics, Forestry, Current Issues (agricultural soil and water conservation), Soils and Land Use and Wildlife. Each test is worth 100 points for a combined available total of 500 points.

Through the early rotations, some surprise teams rose to the top of the leader board. The lead changed with each successive rotation until the outcome was determined based on scores during the final rotation.

Members of the Canon-McMillan blue team will each receive a $500 scholarship for the higher education path of their choice. Envirothon scholarship sponsors were Consol Energy, MarkWest Liberty Midstream & Resources, EQT and the Pennsylvania Envirothon.

Members of the winning team also will represent Washington County at the state envirothon, which will be held May 23 and 24 at the

University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown campus.
