Local youth were among 131 4-H’ers from 52 counties across the state who met in Harrisburg recently for the annual Pennsylvania 4-H Capital Days program. Capital Days is a citizenship-awareness and civic-engagement educational program held by Pennsylvania 4-H. The program is designed to engage 4-H’ers in the political process and prepare them to become active and engaged citizens of Pennsylvania. Youth learn about governmental issues and the political process; how to advocate and speak out about issues that affect them, their families and their communities; and gain leadership and citizenship skills. Delegates participated in workshops on parliamentary procedure, party roles and affiliations, advocacy and etiquette. They learned how to read and debate a bill and participated in a mock legislative session. Delegates are encouraged to share the concepts and skills with their fellow 4-H members. Attending from Washington County were, above, front, Katrina Anderson, chief of staff from the office of state Sen. Camera Bartolotta, R-Carroll Township, left, and Ashlin Hawkinberry; and back row, from left, Heather Frederick, Brittany Janusey and Aeriahna Gregg. Below, from left, are state Rep. Rick Saccone, R-Elizabeth, Anna Schmitt and Pam Paletta, extension 4-H educator.
