‘Touch-A-Truck’ returning to Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG – Children from all over Greene County will be able to sit inside emergency vehicles and learn about police cars and fire trucks, plus several other trucks and construction vehicles Saturday during Waynesburg’s annual Touch-A-Truck event.
Large vehicles, including dump trucks, tractors, tow trucks, school buses and an ambulance, will be set up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of First Baptist Church on West High Street.
“When we first started Touch-A-Truck seven years ago, we were the first ones in this area to do it,” said Dawn Mankey, event coordinator. “Children don’t get to touch these trucks, but on this day, they get to actually sit in the driver’s seat, honk the horn and experience those trucks.”
The free event offers prizes and a free T-shirt to children ages 12 and younger, Mankey said. There also will be several other activities for the youngsters, including a scavenger hunt, face-painting, a photo booth, pinatas and free lunch.
Rice Energy is bringing an ice cream truck, and the Waynesburg-Franklin Volunteer Fire Company will bring its “smokehouse” that serves as a fire simulator.
“There’s just so much for the kids,” Mankey said.
Last year, Mankey said they registered 832 children 12 and younger, with more than 2,000 people at the event.
“Everyone has their own way of teaching kids how these trucks work,” she said. “We have several kids who have chosen careers from being at Touch-A-Truck.”
