Waynesburg to host trivia night

WAYNESBURG – Greene County residents will need to bring their thinking caps to this year’s annual trivia night, which raises scholarship money for graduating seniors across the county.
The Central Greene Scholarship Trust will host its fifth trivia contest at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Waynesburg Central High School cafeteria, and this year, all Greene County senior students have a chance to win.
Mike Camilli, treasurer of the nonprofit, said the trust was initially established to raise scholarship money for Central Greene’s graduating seniors, but they’ve since branched out.
“Last year, we made a push to go countywide,” he said.
How it works is if any of the five school districts send at least two teams to the trivia contest, they are guaranteed one scholarship for one of their graduating seniors who plans to attend college.
“It doesn’t have to be administration or teachers, but it could be students or parents representing a school district,” said Mark McCurdy, vice president of the trust.
In addition, one $500 scholarship will be eligible to any of the districts, whether they attend or not.
“What we’re trying to do is have something that will span the gap for well-rounded students who may not qualify for other types of scholarships,” McCurdy said.
He said the school’s guidance counselors will determine which students will receive the scholarships.
The money is tied to the students’ academic record, and they won’t get the money until they maintain a 2.5 grade-point average after their first semester of college, he said.
The winning trivia team also will receive $1,000 to donate to their choice of a local charity. During the past four years, the organization has given out 20 scholarships totaling $10,000 and has raised $7,000 for local charities.
“Every year we’ve grown,” Camilli said. “This year, we only have a couple teams registered, but we’re already over $6,000.”
Camillis said they are expecting a record number of teams this year.
“It could be as many as 11, but it will depend on whether we have the participation from schools,” he said.
The trivia contest will have 10 categories with five questions each. Team registration deadline is Thursday by sending an email to centralgreenescholarshiptrust@gmail.com.
Cost is $25 per player for teams with five or more players; $30 per player for teams of four players; and $10 for spectators.
Refreshments will be provided, and there will be a basket raffle.
